Egypt continue with another win as Rwanda edge Kenya in World Champs qualifier

Kigali Rwanda November 28, 2013 - Reigning African champions Egypt claimed their third victory on day three of the FIVB World Championship zone 5 (Pool Q) qualification tournament held at the Amahoro Sports Complex in Kigali, Rwanda on Thursday when they beat Uganda 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-16).

In the second match of the day, over 3,000 fans cheered onto victory, hosts Rwanda who beat Kenya 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13).

Egypt v Uganda 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-16)

Coach Ndawula made one change from the team that defeated Burundi 3-0 by starting George Aporu ahead of Nicholas Dheyongera. Uganda had some good moments, with Kamugasha making kills in position two while Otim and Aporu made a few points off the block. Later John Bosco Opendi came on for Okumu.

Egypt led 8-4 by the end of the first technical time out (TTO) and they lead 16-9 by the second.  Aporu and Libero Elanyu Emmanuel struggled on cover as Egypt took the set 25-15.

Uganda continued trailing by one (8-7) going into the second TTO.  From 8-7 Egypt took five straight points to make it 13-7, while Uganda responded with four to make it 13-11. Egypt, however, led 15-12 by the second TTO.

Though Uganda stretched them into the twenties Egypt came out on top with a score of 25-22. By the third set Uganda’s morale was already down as Egypt took the set and match 25-16.

“I don’t think we gave our best, but it was important that the players get exposed,” said Uganda coach Anthony Ndawula. “I am not blaming anyone, we all knew Egypt was going to be a tall order and what would you expect from players who are playing against them for the first time?” he asked.

Rwanda v Kenya 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13)

Rwanda breathed through the first set 25-18 while Kenya struggled to find their feet, with their block, attack and court cover. Kenya tried to come back to the game but continued to trail in the second set 8-4 by the first technical timeout. They made six straight points to lead 10-8. But Rwanda got to the second TTO 16-15 and Kenya later lost the set 25-20.

Kenya were more composed in the third set, as Daniel Kiptoo, Phillip Maiyo and Sila Mikaso came out of their shadows. Kenya won two quick sets 25-21, 25-22 forcing the match into a decider. It was a tight tie breaker as every point was answered back with another point, with Kenya leading the first technical timeout 8-7. The match continued in a similar vein until Rwanda broke off to make it 14-12. Maiyo served out for Rwanda to win their second game of the tournament.
