The next edition of the FIVB's premiere world event is fast approaching. The first round of qualification tournaments in the NORCECA region are already complete, and with the other four confederations joining them over the next few months 2013 promises to deliver fierce competition between teams jockeying for the 24 spots in the next FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship. Those who qualify will earn tickets to the Polish cities of Gdansk, Wroclaw, Bydgoszcz, Katowice, Lodz and Krakow for 15 days of play starting September 3, 2014.
Teams from Asia will compete for four spots, while three teams will
qualify from Africa. Nine teams will qualify from Europe, three from
South America and five from NORCECA. One of the European spots is
already reserved for the hosts, Poland.
Each confederation is organising its own qualification process. The
first round of elimination tournaments began in the NORCECA region in
2012, while the other four confederations start selecting their World
Championship candidates in 2013.
The first World Championships were organised in 1949 for Men and 1952 for Women. Both gender events have remained the biggest events in volleyball, along with the Olympic Games since 1964. In the event's long history, the former USSR and Czechoslovakia have seen the most success, although recent years have been dominated by Brazil - champions three times running in 2002, 2006, and the last Men’s World Championship in Italy in 2010.
Brazil beat Cuba in the 2010 finals, while Serbia held off hosts Italy to capture bronze. The 2010 defending champions will have to work hard to stay on top, with a growing number of strong national volleyball programmes, new formats for major FIVB international competitions designed to increase competition, and a new category of U23 events that give young players more opportunities to build experience before graduating to the senior level.
