Moscow, Russia, November 17, 2010 – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated the women’s national team following their victory at the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Japan last Saturday in a personal message to the side.
Russia beat Brazil 3-2 in a thrilling final in Tokyo to successfully defend the crown they won in 2006. It was the country’s seventh title, making them the most successful side in the history of the tournament. Russian star Ekaterina Gamova was also named MVP at the competition.
“It makes me happy to congratulate you on your triumphant performance at the [FIVB Women’s] World Championship in Japan,” the message read. “You won this victory through hard struggle, and displayed true team spirit, excellent sports skills, and strength of character in the final game against the Olympic champion team from Brazil. You defended your champion’s title and once again confirmed the high level of Russia’s Volleyball school. I wish you new achievements and all the very best.”
