Czechs bounced by resurgent Thais

Wilavan Apinyapong scored 20 points to lead Thailand in the victory over Czech Republic

Nagoya, Japan, November 10, 2010 – Thailand rallied to beat the Czech Republic in four sets (16-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23) on the final day of second-round Pool F play in the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship at Nippon Gaishi Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

The victory was crucial for Thailand who had to win to retain any hope of advancing to the semifinals. The loss eliminated the Czech Republic. Apinyapong Wilavan and Sittirak Onuma were the offensive forces for Thailand, compiling 20 and 17 points respectively. Onuma recorded four serving aces and Emorn Phanusit contributed 10 points.

Aneta Havlickova led the Czechs with a match-high 23 points. Helena Havelkova and Ivana Plchotova added 14 and 12 respectively. The Czechs had the advantage in blocking, 14-7, including six by Plchotova but it was not enough against Thailand's faster pace.

The Czech Republic led 16-12 at the second TTO in the first set and Thailand, who were routed by Italy on Tuesday, appeared flat again in losing the set 25-16. Helena Havelkova scored eight points for the Czechs in the opening set.

Led by Sittirak, the Thais came back in the second set with some nice passing and equalized, 25-18. Thailand continued the surge in the third set, serving well and playing good defence, and took the set 25-20. The Thais were especially adept at well-placed tips, frustrating the Czechs several times.

The Czech Republic led 16-13 at the second TTO in the fourth set but Thailand surged ahead 18-17 and closed out the contest 25-23. The match marked this first meeting ever between the two nations.
