Brazil rout Germany to qualify for semifinals

Brazilian Sheila contributed 16 points to the quick victory of Brazil over Germany

Nagoya, Japan, November 9, 2010 – The powerhouse that is Brazil registered a straight-sets victory (25-16, 25-13, 25-21) over Germany on the third day of second-round Pool F play in the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship at Nippon Gaishi Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory qualified top-ranked Brazil for the semifinals and kept them unbeaten in the tournament. The loss was a setback for 15th-ranked Germany's attempts to qualify for the semifinals. Natalia Pereira and Sheilla Castro were the offensive forces for the winners, finishing with 20 and 16 points respectively and two blocks apiece. Fabiana added eight points including four blocks.

Brazil took a 16-8 lead at the second TTO in the first set and never looked back, taking it 25-16. Castro had six points for the Brazilians in the set. The second set was another show of domination by Brazil, with Jaqueline rising to deliver several spikes on the way to a 25-13 triumph.

The Germans came out with more vigour in the third set and grabbed a 13-9 lead, but the Brazilians hung tough and equalized at 17-17. A powerful spike by Natalia, who was very influential late in the match, finally put Brazil up 19-18 and they expeditiously concluded matters, 25-21.

This was the 26th meeting all-time between Brazil and Germany with the South Americans holding a 22-4 advantage in the series. Brazil will meet the United States on Wednesday, while Germany face the Netherlands.
