Turkey put out Peru in straight sets

Turkey captain Esra Gümus puts the Peru defence to the test as the world No. 22 beat Peru, ranked 17th in the world, comfortably
Tokyo, Japan, November 9, 2010 – Turkey overcame Peru 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-20) in the second round of the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship at Yoyogi Gymnasium in Tokyo on Tuesday, improving their record to 3-3 to keep alive their slim chance of qualifying for the top four semifinals while Peru dropped to 0-6 to confirm their elimination from the tournament.

The win was a repeat of the result when the teams met in the 2006 Women’s World Championship preliminaries, Turkey winning 3-2 in the two sides’ only previous encounter in an FIVB competition. Neslihan Darnel maintained her position as tournament top scorer with 20 points in the match while Karla Ortiz was Peru’s highest scorer with eight.

Darnel started off the match with a block on Ortiz and a good spike and topped that with two devastating serves that the Peruvians couldn't return. A lovely reverse tip-over by Elena Keldibekova put Peru within two points at 8-6, but a long shot by Patricia Soto and a neat tip-over by Darnel widened the gap to four points, prompting Peru coach Cheol Yong Kim to call a timeout. Neither side dominated the second phase of the match, but at 16-13 Turkey's Eda Erdem dropped a “stealth” serve into the heart of the Peruvian defence and Naz Aydemir followed up a point later with a block on Carla Rueda, bringing another timeout from Kim. Rueda responded with a huge hit and Leyla Chihuan made a brilliant block on Darnel, but three Peruvian errors allowed Turkey to pull away. A fabulous dig by Gulden Kayalar Kuzubasioglu set up a spike point for Neriman Ozsoy and Darnel brought up set-point with another good hit. Bahar Toksoy then blocked Chihuan to put Turkey 1-0 up.

Darnel, Erdem and Ozsoy all came up with big shots for Turkey in the first period of the second set and Aydemir made a great block on Ortiz. Jessenia Uceda spiked well for Peru and there was nothing between the two teams until 9-9 when Peru opened up a small gap. But Darnel settled her team down with a couple of spikes that brought the scores level again at 14-14, prompting Kim to call another timeout. But he couldn't stop his side from committing errors. Three errors in four points saw the Turks six points ahead at 23-17 and a big blast from Erdem brought up set-point. Soto then hit the pole with a spike and the Turks were 2-0 ahead.

Ortiz smacked a spike down the line to start off the third set and Yulissa Zamudio Ore blasted a shot through the Turkish defence. But two soft shots from Darnel put Turkey ahead at 5-4 and after another Peru error, Kim called for a timeout. But a crashing spike by Ozsoy and a long shot by Rueda gave Turkey an 8-5 advantage at the first technical timeout. A great block by Ozsoy on Soto extended Turkey's lead to four points at 15-11, but Uceda led a Peru fightback with a massive blast and a sensational dig that set up a tipover for Chihuan and levelled the scores at 15-15. Toksoy then came up with two monster hits  and soon Turkey were three points up. When a reception error allowed Peru to close to within a point at 20-19, Turkish coach Mehmet Bedestenlioglu called his first timeout of the match. Ortiz then planted a serve into the net, handing the momentum back to Turkey. A great spike by Ozsoy brought up match-point and a scrambled point at the net by Toksoy ended the match.
