Russia march on with fourth win

Defending champion Russia claimed a fourth straight win in four sets (25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22) against Korea

Osaka, Japan, November 2, 2010 – Defending champions Russia made it four wins out of four at the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship, registering a four-set victory (25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22) over close rivals Korea in Pool D.

With both teams already qualified for the second round, this was a contest to determine seeding and collect points, and in 22-point Tatiana Kosheleva the Russians had the player to head the charge on the fourth day of tournament action.

Liubov Shashkova added 17 points of her own as Vladimir Kuzyutkin's side prevailed at the Osaka Municipal Central Gym to become outright leaders of Pool D. Song-Yi Han and Youn-Joo Hwang mustered the Korean response with 15 points each.

Russia led 16-14 at the Second Technical Timeout (STT) of the first set, in what until then had been a close affair. However, the taller Russians began applying pressure and took the set 25-18 on an Ekaterina Gamova spike.

The second set was all about Russia's power, which was showcased as they smashed spike after spike on the way to a 25-17 success.

Park Sam-Ryong's side, who remain second in the group despite this first defeat, put on a spirited display in the third set. They held a 16-10 edge at the STT, with the Russians appearing to tire, and suitably encouraged clinched the set 25-19.

The Koreans were in front again during the early part of the fourth set, until Russia went ahead at 14-13. Although Korea tied the scores at 16-16, the European team surged again to capture the final set 25-22.

Korea will play third-placed Turkey in their final first-round match on Wednesday, when Russia face China.
