Turkey shoot through after epic comeback

Turkey rallied for a five-set victory over Canada at the Osaka City Municipal Gymnasium on Tuesday afternoon

Osaka, Japan, November 2, 2010 - Turkey rallied to complete a five-set victory over Canada at the FIVB Women's World Championship on the fourth day of first-round action in Pool D at the Osaka City Municipal Gymnasium on Tuesday. Victory clinched a spot in the second round for Turkey.

Superb play from Neslihan Darnel, top scorer in the competition entering the match, again proved vital for Turkey. Darnel scored a match-high 25 points while team-mate Eda Erdem added 19. Sarah Pavan was top scorer for Canada with 17 points. Turkey triumphed despite committing more errors (28) than the Canadians (20).

Canada held a 16-13 lead at the second TTO in the first set and scored five of the next six points to take a 21-14 lead. Turkey then mounted a small comeback before falling 25-19. Pavan scored five points for Canada in the set.

The Canadians retained the momentum in the second set, leading most of the way and closing it out on a spike by Kyla Richey. By this stage Turkey had committed 16 errors through two sets to Canada's four.

The Europeans finally got going in the third set with the help of setter Elif Agca, and they prevailed 25-14. Canada meanwhile were plagued by mistakes in the fourth set as Turkey pulled level in the match, taking the set 25-17. Turkey dominated in the final set, establishing a 10-3 lead, before putting the Canadians away on a spike by Gozde Kirdar.

The match marked the first-ever meeting between the nations in an FIVB competition. Canada will now play the Dominican Republic on Wednesday on the final day of first-round play, while Turkey will take on Korea.
