San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 21, 2010 – Puerto Rico's departure date for the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship arrived on Thursday with Carlos Cardona's squad setting out for Asia eight days ahead of their tournament opener against Italy on 29 October.
The Puerto Ricans will arrive in Sendai this Saturday where they will play the University of Sendai in two friendly matches before moving on to Hamamatsu on Wednesday, their base for the first-round games against Pool B rivals Italy, Kenya, Czech Republic, Brazil and the Netherlands.
This is the third World Championship in a row in which Puerto Rico have taken part. They finished 15th in 2006 and 12th in 2002. Earlier this year they ranked 11th in the FIVB World Grand Prix, picking up just one win over Thailand on the opening weekend.
