Winnipeg, Canada, October 12, 2010 – Cuba's women's team won two of three friendly matches against Canada at the University of Manitoba's Investors Group Athletic Centre as both sides continued their preparations for the FIVB Women's World Championship in Japan from October 29-November 14.
Cuba won the opening match in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) with Kenia Carcaces and Gyselle Silva leading the scoring with 17 and 13 points respectively. Canada's Sarah Pavan top-scored for the home side with 10 tallies.
The world No.6, Cuba, also prevailed in the second match 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 29-27). Silva and Yanelis Santos each tallied 11 points for the winners while Canada's Pavan topped all the scorers with 16 and Tammy Mahon registered 10 points.
Canada recovered in the third and final match of the series, overcoming the visitors 3-1 (18-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-17). Pavan and Mahon were again the home team's most prolific players, registering 13 and 11 points, while Cuba's Santos impressed with a match-high 22 points including seven aces.
