Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, September 4, 2010 – 2008 Olympic Games and three-time World Grand prix champion Mari of Brazil has been ruled out of the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship, which will take place from October 29-November 14 in Japan, due to injury. The wing spiker suffered a sprained right knee on August 26, in a match against Poland during the World Grand Prix Final Round in Ningbo, China and on Saturday underwent arthroscopy which showed a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, which had to be rebuilt. The recovery time is six months.

"Mari had a total rupture, but the ligament has been reconstructed. The surgery was a success. Everything went well. Now, she will follow the normal protocol to recover from an injury like this, which will take around six months," Ney Pecegueiro, physician of the Brazilian men's and Unilever – Mari’s current club, said.
According Pecegueiro, who performed the operation, Mari will be released from the hospital on Monday.
