Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, September 3, 2010 – Brazil’s Marianne “Mari” Steinbrecher continues to be a doubt for the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship after it was confirmed that she will have surgery on the knee she injured in last month’s FIVB World Grand Prix.
Mari suffered the injury on August 26 in Brazil’s match against Poland. An MRI confirmed ligament damage on Thursday and she will undergo an arthroscopy to repair the damage and also identify whether the rupture of the ligament is partial or total.
“It seems that some fibers are left over from the injured area,” Julio Nardelli, Brazil’s doctor said. “In surgery, we will know if what is left of the ligament is sufficient to maintain the stability of the knee.”
