Serbia's Brakocevic building nicely for World Champs

Jovana Brakocevic helped Serbia and Montenegro to the bronze medal at the 2006 FIVB World Championships before competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games
Verona, Italy, January 25, 2010 – Serbia’s Jovana Brakocevic is shaping up to be a key figure in her national team’s FIVB Women’s World Championship Japan 2010 campaign later this year following a solid performance in an All Star victory over an Italian selection in Verona, Italy on Sunday.

Brakocevic, who helped Serbia and Montenegro to the bronze medal at the 2006 FIVB World Championships and led Serbia to Beijing Olympic Games qualification in 2008, was the third best scorer for the All Star team with 10 points in the match, in which the All Star's beat the Italian Selection 3-1 (25-13, 16-25, 25-17, 25-21).

The match, which saw foreign stars from the Italian A1 League play against an Italian side, which featured international's Antonella Del Core, Martina Guiggi, Cristina Barcellini and Giulia Rondon, was watched by almost 5,000 fans.

The All Stars started strong, putting on a solid offense in the first set before the Italian’s fought back to bring the game level. But the All Stars powered through the final two sets to secure victory in the annual contest, which saw Lithuania’s Valdone Petrauskaite top score with 22 points.

Additionally, it was announced before the game that the Italian Volleyball Federation will be holding an auction on their website to help raise money for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Items for sale will include the net from Sunday’s All Star game, as well as autographs from all of the players that took part.

The FIVB and the NORCECA Volleyball Confederation has also created a special fund for those compassionate friends and institutions around the world with a desire to alleviate the suffering in Haiti.
