Managua, Nicaragua, December 16, 2008 – With the conclusion of the double-gender tournaments played in Managua, Nicaragua, five NORCECA teams have now qualified for the third round of the 2010 FIVB Volleyball World Championships.
The two second-round Managua tournaments were played in advance to facilitate organisation in Nicaragua. Europe will now host the next four World Championship events in January 2009, with first-round men’s tournaments in Riga, Latvia (January 2-4), and Vienna, Austria (January 3-5), and first-round men’s and women’s tournaments in Sheffield, England (January 2-4).
Thanks to their podium places in the recent tournament played in Managua, Nicaragua, the Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama women’s teams are now qualified for the third round. Guatemala and Nicaragua will play against Cuba and a yet-to-be decided fourth team in the NORCECA-F pool in Cuba next summer. Panama will play in the NORCECA-H pool in Dominican Republic, together with the host team, Mexico and a yet-to-be-decided fourth team.
The Panama and Guatemala men’s teams also qualified for the World Championship third round in the tournament preceding the women’s event in Managua. They will next play in the NORCECA-F pool in USA with the host team and Dominican Republic in August 2009.
