In-form Italy steam past Thailand

Serena Ortolani shone in both defence and attack for Italy
Nagoya, Japan, November 9, 2010 – Italy overcame Thailand in comfortable fashion with a straight-sets win (25-13, 25-12, 25-19) on the third day of second-round Pool F play at Nippon Gaishi Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The Italians came into the match with momentum following their victory over the United States on Sunday and were never threatened. Although Thailand were coming off a solid victory over the Netherlands, they appeared sluggish from the outset and were comprehensively beaten. The result leaves Italy third in the pool with a 4-2 record while Thailand sit bottom (1-5).

Massimo Barbolini’s side outclassed their opponents in just about every department – Italy made just eight errors to Thailand's 22, had a 10-3 advantage in blocking and bettered them 3-1 in the aces category.

Simona Gioli and Serena Ortolani were the catalysts for Massimo Barbolini's side. Gioli compiled six blocks among her 16 points and Ortolani added 13 including two blocks and one ace. Valentina Arrighetti also had two blocks while contributing 10 points to the victory. Onuma Sittirak and Pleumjit Thinkaow registered 11 and 9 points respectively for the defeated side.

Italy controlled the pace and took the first set 25-13 in just 17 minutes. The second set was a repeat of the first, with the Italians playing strongly at the net and not finding much resistance on the way to a 25-12 win in 19 minutes. Thailand put up more of a fight in the final set, taking a 13-10 lead, but Italy stormed back and equalised at 14-14.

A nice option play spike by Gioli put Italy up 20-18 and the Italians quickly ended it 25-19. Italy will play Cuba on Wednesday, while Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai’s Thais go up against the Czech Republic.
