Team profile

Algeria have recently emerged as one of the best teams in Africa, with some fantastic success over the last few years allied to an attractive and modern style of play.

The Algerian team has come together after more than nine years of work and development, with most players coming from the cities of Bejaia and Chlef where a lot was done during the 1990s to identify players.

Most of these players started their international careers in 2000 at the Girls’ African Championship where they surprised everyone with their talent and won the title. A year later the same girls won the junior title, beating everyone in straight sets, before playing in two world age-group championships.

Some of the players are now playing in professional leagues in Europe, which is helping develop their skills further. The Algerians play with a modern style adapted to their physical and technical skills. Their top players include Lydia Oulmou and Faiza Tsabet, who both play for Istres Volleyball in France.

Coach profile

Ikhedji Mouloud signed up as Algeria coach in 2006 after being the side’s assistant for a number of years prior to that.

He has had experience at several competitions in the past including the 1998 FIVB World Championship and numerous African Championships.

He also led the side to their first Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.
