Algeria secures second African ticket to Japan 2010

The Algerian team before the final match
Batna, Algeria, July 24, 2009 - Algeria secured the second African ticket to the finals of 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Japan following their victory over Mauritius on the third and last day of the Africa Pool D competition held here at Batna Grande Salle on Friday.
Egypt, meanwhile, cruised past South Africa to finish second in the four-nation competition.
Algeria joins Kenya as the two African representatives at next year’s World Championship in Japan. Algeria represented the continent last summer at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Having already taken a big step toward Japan by defeating their biggest rivals Egypt on Thursday, Algeria needed a victory over Mauritius to clinch the second African ticket. Algeria started aggressively and stayed that way to down their opponent 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-8) in 55 minutes.
The host team was supported by 2,000 home fans, who watched as superstar Faiza Tsabet spiked to perfection and center Lydia Oloumou threw up a strong block. Tsabet was the top scorer with 12 points, followed by Olumou with 11.
Algeria improved their competition win- loss ratio at the end of the competition to 3-0. Mauritius dropped to 1-2 to finish third.
After losing theoretically the chances to compete for the African ticket, the low motivated Egyptian players eased past the outsiders South Africa 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-10, 25-14) in 84 minutes. The Egyptian left attacker Nahla Abdel Fattah was the match best players for her fighting and also the 17 points scored during the match coming as the best scorer. The strong spiker Marwa Abdel Razek showed also good work.
Egypt improved their competition record to 2-1 to finish second in the final standings leaving South Africa at the bottom of the table with 0-3 record.
