Race for World Championship semifinals underway

The young Argentina squad faces a tough test during the World Championship's third round in Florence

Rome, Italy, October 4, 2010 - The zero hour is here as the race for the FIVB Men's World Championships Italy 2010 gets underway at 17:00 (local time) with the first of 12 third round matches over three days starting in Rome and Florence.

Twelve teams are split into four groups of three where teams will play each other once to determine who goes into the respective semifinals. The pool winners will qualifiy for the positions 1-4 semifinals, second-placed teams will advance to positions 5-8 semifinals and the third-placed team in each pool will advance to the positions 9-12 semifinals.

Eight European teams (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Serbia and Spain) and two representatives from each South America (Argentina and Brazil) and NORCECA (Cuba and United States) are still in contention for the title.

The scene is set at the Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence and PalaLottomatica in the Italian capital to host Monday's four exciting matches in what French coach Philippe Blain has described as the real start of the World Championship.

France are in Pool O in Rome and will face Olympic champions USA on Monday before Czech Republic takes on defending champions Brazil in Pool R. In Florence, Serbia meet Argentina and Spain is pitted against Bulgaria.

Pool O in Rome
Oct 4: USA (3) v France (12) 5pm
Olympic champions USA need to improve from their early outings as the world No. 3 squares off against France in the opening match at PalaLottomatica. Two of their three victories thus far went to five-sets against low ranked Mexico (26) and Cameroon (21). On the other side, the French side scored a convincing 3-0 victory against Japan but are minus their main gun Antonin Rouzier, who sustained a potentially tournament-ending ankle injury during the match. The last time the two sides met each other was in the 2007 World League Finals with USA getting the better hand in straight sets.

Pool R in Rome
Oct 4: BRA (1) v CZE (36) 9pm
The Czech Republic is on the crest of the wave with four victories in a row following a five-set defeat to France in its debut, but today they are facing a very tough task against super power Brazil. In their last two matches they blanked USA and breezed past Cameroon in just 73 minutes. Meanwhile, defending world champions Brazil have won three of their first five matches and still have to show their characteristic form. First setter Marlon is still a big question mark for today’s contest but Bruno should return from injury. In the last match between these two teams, Brazil defeated the Czech Republic 3-0 in the second round of the 2006 World Championship.

Pool P in Florence
Oct 4: SRB (4) v ARG (9) 5pm
Here we have a clash of titans between two teams ranked among the top 10 in the world. After a second place finish with a 1-2 mark in the first round, including a loss to world No. 20 Canada, Serbia entered on the right track and claimed victories over Cuba and Mexico in the second phase. On the other side, Argentina is featuring a young squad performing with amazing results thus far as its 4-1 record shows. Facundo Conte, Rodrigo Quiroga and Federico Pereyra, are “The Three Amigos” in the current South American team. Serbia won 3-0 in their last contest during the final round of this year’s World League in Argentina.

Pool Q in Florence
Oct 4: ESP (37) v BUL (7) 9pm
Both Bulgaria and Spain qualified to the second round as third place finishers but they have had some impressive matches as the Bulgarian boys outlasted Poland with a 3-0 victory in the second round of the competition while the Spaniards stretched Cuba to five sets before succumbing in the opening phase. Spain’s Iban Perez is the second best scorer of the tournament behind Argentinean Facundo Conte while Bulgaria features Vladimir Nikolov and Matey Kazyisky who are among the top-10 scoring weapons in the championship. The last contest between the two squads was a thriller with Bulgaria prevailing in five in the 2008 World League while Bulgaria have only lost twice in 13 matches against their fellow Europeans.
