Russia confirm class with straight-sets win over Egypt |
Egyptian Ahmed Abdelhay tries in vain to spike through the Russian block |
Catania, Italy, September 30, 2010 – Russia beat Egypt in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-18) in the opening match of Pool I in the second round of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship at PalaCatania on Thursday. The blocking of the tall Russian team, ranked No 2 in the world, was one of the main reasons for their victory against an animated Egyptian side who never quit despite their clear disadvantage.
Maxim Mikhaylov was Russia’s top scorer with 13 points including two blocks and one ace. Taras Khtey added 10 points and Yury Berehzko finished with eight. However Egypt’s Ahmed Abdelhay out-did everybody with a match-high 16 points.
Russia took the lead 8-6, taking advantage of some Egyptian errors as well as two Khtey attacks. But Egypt levelled it at 8-8 with a powerful spike from Abdelhay and a Russian mistake. At the second technical timeout Russia were ahead by one point at 16-15 after Youseff’s serve went long, and they increased their lead to 19-16 thanks partly to some excellent blocking by Mikhaylov. Then it was Muserskiy’s turn to shine on the block, and a mistake from Salah made it 21-16 to the Russians before Volkov, with the fifth Russian block, sealed the set 25-21.
In the second set Russia began with a cannon of a shot from Khtey and went on to take an 8-3 lead at the first break with setter Grankin on fine form. Salah did his best to reduce the arrears from the back line but the Russian block held firm and at 12-5 down Egypt started to lose concentration on their serve. By the second break Russia were 16-7 ahead before Khtey’s ace added to their advantage. Down 21-9, Egypt rallied with three consecutive points thanks to a spike by Abdelhay and two aces from Abdalla but it was too little too late and Grankin closed out the set with a well disguised attack.
Early in the third set the match appeared more even. Egypt seemed determined but the Russians were not about to slow down. The first timeout arrived after an ace from Mikhaylov put his side 8-4 in front. Rashad was then replaced by Egyptian captain Abouelhassan and thanks to Abdalla’s serves Egypt were still in the game at 10-8 down. But Russia’s serves and blocks gradually began to wear down their opponents and the end was in sight when Russia took a 16-12 lead at the second technical timeout before eventually running out 25-18 winners.
