"Get ready for the most competitive and exciting World Championship in history" says Castellani

Trieste, Italy, September 24, 2010 – “This is likely to be the toughest and most competitive World Championship in history” stated Poland coach Daniel Castellani this afternoon as the mentors of the four teams starring in Pool F of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship joined an impressive audience for the official press conference held at the NH Hotel in Trieste, Italy.

Poland has gradually turned into a Volleyball “Mecca” in the past few years and Volleyball that fanfare was strengthened after the Castellani’s men claimed – for the first time in history – the European crown last year in Izmir.

“Normally we used to have four to five teams that were going to have a shot at the medals, but this time the bar has been set so high that I feel up to eight or ten teams have real chances to make it to the final stage of the competition,” the Italian added. “We should not count out additional surprises and even major upsets, starting from the preliminaries that are set to start tomorrow.”

Germany coach Raoul Lozano agreed with Castellani, who took over the Polish side when the former stepped down.

“This is the strongest of the preliminary Pools, we have a very tough and demanding schedule ahead of us and basically we only want to make it to the next round, no matter if we end up in first, second or third place,” he said. “This is our main priority. I am sure we are going to have classy matches and Volleyball actions here in Trieste as the quality of the teams competing in this Pool is absolutely stunning.”

Serbia is the third major force to contend with in Pool F and coach Igor Kolakovic appeared confident.

“We have been regularly fighting for the medals for the past 15 years and there is no reason to stop with this tradition here at the World Championship,” Kolakovic, who recently led his side to bronze at the 2010 FIVB World League, stated. “We know we have been drawn into a very tough and difficult Pool but still we are confident that we can make it to the next round.”

Team Canada may be considered the underdog in such a star-studded group, so coach Glenn Hoag has said his side are opting for a down-to-earth attitude.

“We have a very young and inexperienced team, my guys did not play many international matches and therefore our expectations are not too high,” Hoag reiterated. “This will be certainly a good chance to test ourselves and our skills in front of some of the best teams in the world.”

Most of the Canadians are currently playing for European clubs, so are likely to try and exploit their knowledge at the tournament and aim to cause some real upsets after having performed very well at the most recent Pan-American competitions.

All four teams will be fired up for tomorrow however as the tournament begins at the Palatrieste at 5pm (local time) where Canada battle Serbia ahead of the day’s “big match” of Germany against Poland.
