Puerto Rico and Mexico set up pool-deciding clash in Central American and Caribbean Games |
Puerto Rico will play Mexico for top spot in Pool B as they overcame Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday evening |
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, July 25, 2010 – Defending champions Puerto Rico and Mexico both recorded their second victories in Pool B during Sunday’s action at the men’s Volleyball tournament of the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games as their preparations for the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship continues.
The tournament is set to take place in Italy from September 25-October 10 with both sides aiming to travel to Europe at the top of their game.
Puerto Rico picked up a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-8, 25-12) victory over Barbados on the opening day of the competition while Mexico followed up on their straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) win over Trinidad and Tobago.
On Sunday the sides swapped opponents with Mexico defeating a resilient Barbados in straight sets and hosts Puerto Rico also seeing off Trinidad & Tobago without dropping a set. Both defeated sides fell to 0-2 record.
The two sides will now battle for supremacy in Pool B on Monday night and with it a direct ticket to the semifinals.
In Sunday’s other match at Mayaguez Sport Palace, the Dominican Republic opened its Pool A campaign with a four-set win over Panama who dropped to 0-2. The Dominicans will face Venezuela for the pool’s top place.
Puerto Rico v Trinidad & Tobago
Puerto Rico ensured a pool-deciding match against Mexico for the top position in Pool B by defeating Trinidad & Tobago 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-21). Enrique Escalante led Puerto Rico with nine points while Victor Rivera, Roberto Muñiz and Hector Soto each recorded seven tallies. Trinidadian Nolan Tash scored a match-high 12 points and Marc Honore added eight.
“We played with a lot of intensity and less errors than the day before,” Puerto Rico’s coach Carlos Cardona said. “We are in a transition period with changes in our game so we still need to adjust. Mexico is a good team with experience and youth and they are also in a process of change in their game.”
Mexico v Barbados
Mexico improved its win-loss record to 2-0 in Pool B by defeating Barbados 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 30-28). Barbados dropped to 0-2 mark. Mexicans Tomas Aguilera and Jose Martell topped the winners with 15 and 12 points with Aguilera totaling eight blocks and two serving aces. Ivan Contreras and Jesus Rangel charted nine and eight points respectively. Elwyn Oxley and Fabian Cox finished in double figures for the defeated side with 17 and 11.
“We always have tough matches against Barbados and today was not different,” Mexican coach Jorge Azair said. “Now we have to focus in tomorrow’s match for the direct ticket to the semifinals. I think we can win it.”
Dominican Republic v Panama
The Dominican Republic opened their tournament with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 27-29, 25-20) victory over Panama in Pool A. The Dominicans, who built a 16-8 advantage in the blocking category, had left-handed Pedro García as their best scorer with 20 points including four blocks. Jose Caceres added 18 and Elnis Palomino contributed 12 including two aces. Panamanian Ricardo Brown led his side with 17 points and Domingo Avila and Carlos Zuñiga added 15 and 14 respectively.
“Panama played one of its best matches since I have seen them,” Dominican coach Jacinto Campechano said. “We have some new players even in the starting lineup. I hope Caceres’ knee injury is not serious, but we will continue giving our best with him or without him.”
