Rome, Italy, June 2009 - Meet "Volly," the genial mascot of the 2010 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship, who will make his debut on the Palaolimpia parquet in Verona tonight during the 2009 World League.
Volly was the name chosen by Internet users and students of the 10 host cities of the World Championship (Ancona, Catania, Florence, Milan, Modena, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Turin, Trieste and Verona), after months of voting.
The friendly swallow will donate T-shirts and other World Championship paraphernalia and mingle with fans, young and old alike.
The second most popular name for the mascot was "Fly," while "Mimmo," "Italo" and "Gump" finished further down the list.
Volly will be introduced to the public for the first time before the start of the World League match between Italy and China tonight. The mascot, wearing the No. 10 jersey, will also take photos with the players and follow the Italian team during their World League home campaign, which includes stops in Verona on June 12-13, Florence on June 19, Catania on June 21, Mantova on July 3 and Modena on July 5.
The Final Round of the 2010 FIVB Men's World Championship kicks off in Milan on September 24 and will end in Rome on October 10.
