Guba, Azerbaijan, January 11, 2009 - Montenegro qualified for the second round of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship from the first-round Pool D staged this weekend in Guba, Azerbaijan.
Montenegro didn't have much trouble against Azerbaijan
On the final competition day Montenegro easily defeated hosts Azerbaijan and closed out the tournament with no sets lost. Having already suffered a couple of defeats against Albania and Moldova, the local guys were aiming at providing the local audience with a good performance and score as many rallies as possible.
However, Montenegro made it clear from the very beginning that this was not a lucky day for the Azerbaijani Volleyball family. The first set was quickly over at 25-14 and the second set followed the same trend with an easy 25-15 for the guys from Podgorica. In the third set Azerbaijan gave it all but again the opponents were too strong and finished their job at 25-18.
In the second match, Albania defeated Moldova 3-1 to finish the tournament in second place. Albania started out very confidently (12-8), moving up to 16-14 at the second technical time-out. The set was over a few minutes later at 25-22 for the Albanians.
In the second Moldova played a bit better, sailing to 8-5 at the first technical break, but the score was then leveled at 12. Among the Moldovans, Serghei Lazarev was excelling with his attacks, but that was not enough to stop Albania’s run that closed it out at 25-21.
The spectators felt like the match was going to be quickly over with the third set. But Moldova managed to bounce back and to maintain a provisional lead (16-9) until the final 25-16.
The fourth set was very even at the beginning, but Albania sailed away right before the second technical time-out to seize the match at 25-23 for the final 3-1.
In the next round of the 2010 FIVB World Championship, scheduled for late May, Montenegro will face the Czech Republic, Finland, Ukraine and Belgium.
