Japan's Ebata enjoys birthday treat

Birthday girl Yukiko Ebata with mascots Boonus and Volleyboo

Japan coach Masayosi Manabe:
"It was an important match for us. The players concentrated very well and put on a good performance. I think they did well against Neslihan Darnel. She can attack from the left, from the right, from the back – everything about her is good, and she spikes in between blocks. She has great technique in addition to her power. We tried to block her and tried to receive the ball as a team.
"I think Yukiko Ebata did very well today. Her spikes were going very well and I think that's why Yoshie Takeshita used her so often today. They were handling Kaori Inoue's spikes, so I changed to Erika Araki (after losing the second set) because she can block spikes."

Japan player Yukiko Ebata:
"We couldn't afford to lose today, so we're really happy with the win. I had a lot of second-hand sets (not from setter Yoshie Takeshita) and tried to spike hard and my spiking worked well. I tried not to think about it, but in the end I had a wonderful birthday."

Japan captain Erika Araki:
"I'm happy to win today. I tend to get on the court when the team isn't doing so well, so I have to concentrate on that."

Turkey coach Mehmet Bedestenlioglu:
"First, I want to congratulate Japan, they put on an excellent performance today. We had errors in reception and we know they have a good defence and we couldn't match that. They also play a very fast attack, and when we served better our defence wasn't good. I'm sorry about this result, but it's not the end of everything and we will continue to try and do our best."

Turkey player Neslihan Darnel:
"It was a very bad today for us. We played so badly. We did nothing. Japan has such a different style, they play very fast. We lost and we are very unhappy. I don't know (why Turkey's winning second set was different from the other three), we just stopped playing. Really, I don't know. What can I say?
"Yukiko Ebata played very well. Our tactics were to stop 12 (Saori Kimura) and 14 (Ebata), but we couldn't stop them. After this, we have to start again for our next match against Poland. We have to beat them to continue trying to reach our goal."
