Germany coach Giovanni Guidetti:
I'm happy today because we were very concerned about this match. We thought Cuba would be better than yesterday – and they were. In the first set, Cuba played very well with good reception and few mistakes. But my players remained calm – even when they were five or six points down in the first set – and waited for their moment. In the end, we were both lucky and good. But I think my setter played a great match today and our sideout was very good.
I think Cuba have a young group of players. I think maybe they didn't know so much about Croatia, and maybe they had more respect for us – but only because they know us better. So maybe they approached us differently.
Today, we had to make every point; Cuba made some mistakes, but not like yesterday. I think my team deserved to win.
(Re. match preparation): Before every match we have two video sessions with the team, plus individual sessions. I have a great staff working with me and when the team wins a lot of the credit must also go to the staff, because they spend eight to 10 hours in front of their computers every day. Without them, my job would be very difficult. I think I have the best staff in the world.
Germany captain Christiane Furst:
We had a hard match today and both teams played at a high level. At the start we needed some time to find a solution because they played well, especially in reception, so it was difficult in the first set. They are tall and young and athletic and they played much better than yesterday.
Cuba coach Juan Gala Rodriguez:
We knew it would be a tough game because of the quality of the German team. We only have three or four players with much experience, but they haven't been leading the team, and at key moments, they have failed us. Our main concern was Palacios, who is a very young player, but so far, she has been the best player for us. But we are Cubans and will fight to the end. Hopefully, we will be better tomorrow.
(Re. team and younger players): It would be good if the younger players could lead the team, but it can be tougher for them to adjust to these conditions than for the more experienced players, and it's only been two days since we arrived here. Although we lost today, we played better than yesterday.
Cuba captain Yusidey Silie:
We played better than yesterday, but we still made many mistakes, especially at the end of sets and particularly on reception. We have a young team with no experience, but we want to try and stay in the tournament.
