Hooker stars as USA rout Czechs

Destinee Hooker led the USA with a brilliant all-round performance against the Czech Republic at Nagoya

Nagoya, Japan, November 6, 2010 - The United States posted a straight-sets victory (25-20, 25-20, 25-13) over the Czech Republic on the first day of second-round Pool F action at Nippon Gaishi Hall in the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Americans improved to a perfect 4-0, while the Czechs are 1-3 following the loss.

It was a comprehensive victory for the Americans, with Destinee Hooker playing the starring role. She soared through the air and pounded spike after spike. The winners were both quicker and stronger on the day, forcing their opponents into 20 errors. Hooker topped the American scoring charts with 19 points, including three blocks, and scored with two consecutive aces to close the match. Logan Tom scored 10 points and Foluke Akinradewo and Jordan Larson each contributed nine. Anneta Havlickova registered nine points for the Czechs while Helena Havelkova and Ivana Plchotova each finished with eight.

The USA prevailed 25-20 in a competitive first set, with Hooker showing off her impressive leaping ability and scoring five points on attack. The Czechs then led 16-14 at the second TTO in the second set, but the Americans fought back to go 20-18 up. Hooker had another spike in the rally that had the crowd in awe. The US then scored five of the next seven points to take the set 25-20, closing it out on a nice tip by Hooker.

Hugh McCutcheon's American team stepped up the pressure in the final set, playing tough at the net and forcing the Czech Republic into several mistakes. This was the first meeting between the nations since the United States won in straight sets at the 1994 World Championships. The US will play Italy on Sunday, while the Czech Republic meet Germany.
