Team profile

The Peruvian national women’s team is set to participate in the 2010 World Championship with a renewed sense of purpose after an intense period of preparation that included a tour of Europe (France, Belgium, Turkey and Russia); three tournaments in Peru (Telefonica Cup, Peru Tour 2010, and the UNIQUE Cup); a successful appearance in the Pan-American Cup where they finished second; and finally a training camp in Korea.

The Peruvian team is seeking to regain the prominence they achieved during the 1980s when they were ranked one of the top four teams in the world.

The Peruvian Volleyball National Federation was founded on May 12, 1942 under first President Dr. Marcial Ayaipoma Alvarado, with their first participation in South American competition taking place in Argentina in 1964.

The 1960s were the beginning of Peru’s rise to the top of world Volleyball and some years later more success came their way in South American competitions, World Cups and Olympic Games including silver medals at both the 1986 World Championships and the 1988 Olympic Games.

Now with a new team in a new era where Volleyball is fast becoming the most popular sport in the country again, the future is bright for Volleyball in the South American country. The FIVB Women’s World Championship in Japan will provide a perfect gauge of how much more work is needed for Peru to return to the glory days of the 80s.

Coach profile

Kim Cheol Yong became coach of Peru in May 2009, and has been involved in the game since 1980.

He was previously involved with the Korea team, leading them in three Olympic campaigns in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. He also helped them pick up gold at the 1994 Asian Games.

Peru are hoping he brings some of his experience to improve the side and make them a real threat on the world stage.
