Team profile

The last 12 months have seen great success for the Dominican Republic women’s team, currently ranked No.11 in the world. The streak of victories started when they won the NORCECA Championship held in Bayamon, Puerto Rico in September 2009. They then represented the continental confederation at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in Japan, where they collected the bronze medal after beating the hosts for the first time on Japanese soil and for only the second time in their history.

This year, with Brazilian Marcos Kwiek still at the helm, the Dominicans won the Pan-American Cup in Tijuana, Mexico, the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and are fresh from winning the Final Four Cup in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico in September. They also claimed their first victories ever over China and Italy at the FIVB World Grand Prix, where they finished in eighth place.

Now, with an almost completely renovated side, they will be participating for the sixth time in the World Championship with their main goal to improve from the 11th place they took in 1998 when the competition was limited to 16 teams.
Coach profile

Since 2008 Brazilian Marcos Kwiek has continued to try to improve the Dominican Republic side that he took over and in two years has won NORCECA Championship gold as well as FIVB World Grand Champions Cup bronze in their first ever appearance in the tournament.

Prior to coaching the Dominican Republic, Kwiek he was an assistant to Brazil’s women’s senior team, and also coached Pinheiros in Brazil’s Superliga.
