Team profile

Under new head coach Alan Knipe, the United States had a respectable record of 16-6, including winning the 2010 FIVB World Championship Qualifier, silver in the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship and sixth in the 2009 FIVB World League.

The United States had one of its best seasons ever in 2008 when it won the FIVB World League title and the Olympic gold medal.

The U.S. team had been looking to return to the greatness it experienced in the 1980s and '90s when it won two Olympic gold medals (1984 and '88) and a bronze (1992) as well as the FIVB World Cup (1985) and World Championship (1986).

A third-place finish at the 2007 World League and fourth-place at the 2007 World Cup led the team to believe it was on the verge of greatness.

The side opened its 2008 campaign by winning the NORCECA Men's Continental Olympic Qualifier. The U.S. Men won the tournament with a 5-0 record without dropping a set.

In the final round of the 2008 World League the United States beat Serbia against all odds to pick up gold. They then followed this up with a gold medal win over Brazil at the Beijing Olympics.

2010 saw the side return once again to the World League. Grouped alongside Russia the USA failed to qualify from the group and finished eighth overall, helping them build momentum for the World Championships.

Coach profile

USA Volleyball named Alan Knipe its men’s team coach in 2009. He immediately led them qualification for the World Championship, second place at the NORCECA Continental Championship and sixth place at World League.

Knipe took over for Hugh McCutcheon, who guided the U.S. Men’s Team to victories at the 2008 FIVB World League and the Beijing Olympics.

The coach has a long relationship with USA Volleyball. Most recently, he served as the coach for the team at the 2008 Pan America Cup in Winnipeg, Canada, where they won a gold medal.
