Team profile

Puerto Rico’s biggest achievement over the last few years was at the FIVB 2007 Men’s World Cup where they finished sixth.

The team are fairly successful in the NORCECA Championships and often challenge the bigger Volleyball nations of Cuba and USA.

The side are also looking to improve on their last FIVB World Championship outing in 2006 where they finished 12th behind Canada.

Puerto Rico finished the last Olympic Cycle 10th in the FIVB Rankings, the highest ranking for Puerto Rico in any sport.  Consistently leading the NORCECA standings alongside the USA they are deemed as the sole powerhouse of Caribbean Volleyball with a gold medal in the 2002 and 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games.

In 2006 Puerto Rico qualified for its first FIVB World Championship in over 20 years, and in 2007 won their first NORCECA medal (silver). They also claimed a historical sixth place in the 2007 FIVB World Cup, with wins over Olympic champions the USA and European Champions Spain. The Olympic Dream fell short with a loss against Poland in the FIVB Olympic Qualifier in Portugal.

There are high expectations for the side to reach the final round of the World Championships from this small but passionate Volleyball country.

Coach profile

Carlos Cardona began coaching Puerto Rico in 2006 following stints in the Argentinean National League, the Italian League and the Puerto Rican League.

He began well with a 3-2 win over his home country Argentina and since then the 49-year-old has helped lead the team in over 70 matches.

He says the best result for him was the 3-1 win over the USA in the 2007 FIVB World Cup. Puerto Rico went on to finish sixth.
