Team profile

Tatsuya Ueta, coach of Japan since the squad failed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics, has been working tirelessly for his players ever since and it all came to fruition last year as the side picked up their first FIVB medal in 32 years, winning bronze at the 2009 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup.

Ueta has tried to improve his players’ attitude towards being top athletes and to boost their morale. Furthermore, he has worked on improving physical fitness and fundamental skills with combined offence. As a result, Japan has improved remarkably in every aspect through many international matches over the last few years.

Additionally, 2009 saw the team successfully qualify for the 2010 FIVB World Championship in Italy and win the Asian Men’s Championship.

As a result the side are coming to this year’s tournament more confident than ever before.

Coach profile

Tatsuya Ueta became coach of Japan in 2004, immediately after the squad failed to qualify for the Athens Olympics.

He joined Nippon Steel Blazers in 1987 and played for Japan from 1989 to 1993 before becoming a coach in 1995. He then joined the Japan Volleyball Association as coach of the junior national team in 2001.

His best result so far has been a bronze medal at the 2009 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup.
