Team profile

The Iran men’s team had an excellent 2009 in which they qualified for the FIVB Men’s World Championship and competed at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in Japan, finishing fifth after a sole victory over Egypt.

The team is led by captain Alireza Nadi, a player the squad has always turned to for guidance and experience in tough matches and has proven to be an inspiration on the court.

Setter Saeid Marouf is another key player for the side, constantly providing attacking options for his spikers.

One of the strongest teams in Asia for many years, Iran has also become all the more powerful under coach Hossein Maadani who has helped unleash the teams true potential since taking the berth.

Coach profile

Hossein Maadani is a former Iranian national team player, joining the squad in 1987 and taking part in the Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan in 1994.

Before being named coach of the men’s national team in 2008, Maadani played for Esteglal , Seda Sima, Bank Keshavarzi, Bonyad Shahid, Homa, Fat'h, Peykan and Daneshgah Azad.

Maadani, who has a degree in chemical engineering, appears to have a youthful intelligence which helped lead Iran to some impressive performances during last year’s World Grand Champions Cup.
