Team profile

The Czech national team has an impressive record under the old Czechoslovakia flag and later as the Czech Republic.

Czechoslovakia had the honour of staging the first FIVB World Championship back in 1949 in Prague where the host team took the silver medal. Since then the side has taken part in all but one of the tournaments (1994 being the exception), taking the title twice, in France 1956 and at Czechoslovakia in 1966.

The side has also participated in five Olympic Games, with its best finish coming at the Tokyo1964 Games  where they finished with the silver medal. It has finished in the top five at the FIVB World Cup in its three participations, including two bronze medals and took fourth at its only FIVB World League appearance in 2003. At the last World Championship the Czech Republic finished 15th.

Coach profile

Jan Svoboda has only recently become coach of the Czech Republic, recruited for the job in 2009. He has led his team in eight games but prior to that he was a player-coach for the Tunisia team as well as a club coach in Germany.

He also coaches Czech side VO Vavex Pribram who play in the country’s top division and has plenty of experience  having helped lead numerous teams in a total of 362 matches.
