Mexico finishes atop Men's NORCECA-D Pool

Mexico celebrates its victory
Kingston, Jamaica, May 24, 2009 — Mexico breezed past Bahamas in straight sets Sunday to finish first at the NORCECA-D second round tournament of the 2010 FIVB Men's World Championship.

The Mexicans, who didn't drop a single set in the competition, beat the Bahamians 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.

The victory gave the Mexicans a berth in the third-round NORCECA-G Pool with Puerto Rico, Barbados, and the second-place team from NORCECA -C in Trinidad & Tobago. Despite the loss, the Bahamians also advanced to the third round, where they will play Cuba, Canada and the winner of the event in Trinidad in the NORCECA-H Pool.

The Mexicans saved their best volleyball for last as they dominated Bahamas from start to finish, relying again on the strong blocking.

"It was important for us to win today and go to Puerto Rico," said Jorge Azair, the Mexican coach. "The last time we played against Puerto Rico they edged us in five sets, so we know we can beat each other. Today our players went out focused and determined. Without a doubt it was our best match in the whole competition."

Irving Bricio was the top Mexican scorer with 12 points, while Leonardo Manzo had 9. Tomas Aguilera and Victor Porras each contributed 8 points.

In the first match on Sunday, Jamaica defeated Haiti 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18) to finish in third place.

Having yet to emotionally recover from their stunning loss to Bahamas the previous night, the Jamaicans nevertheless had enough gas in the tank to maneuver past the Haitians.

Mark Lewis led the Jamaicans with 15 points and Dellan Brown and Conaradio Taylor added 12 and 10 respectively.

"We are happy that we won," said Jack David, the Jamaican coach. "Our goal was to qualify but we didn’t accomplish it. After what happened last night, our guys came out focused and ready to fight."
