Cuba claim second of three final round spots

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 27, 2005 – A 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-12) win over Guatemala on Saturday was enough for Cuba to claim the second of three final round tickets on offer at the 2006 Women’s World Championship second round tournament (NORCECA E) after the Dominican Republic had claimed the first ticket on Friday.

Cuba’s straight sets win was their third successive of the tournament and now means they will play the Dominican Republic on Sunday for the tournament honours.

In Saturday’s other match Costa Rica beat Jamaica 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 27-25) to force a decider between themselves and Guatemala on Sunday to see who will claim the third ticket.

The top three finishers in the tournament advance to the final round of the 2006 World Championships as members of the NORCECA zone.

USA, Puerto Rico and Mexico secured the first three NORCECA slots for the World Championships at the “NORCECA D” World Championship second round tournament in Puerto Rico earlier this month.
