Brazil on the verge of final round

Cabo Frio, Brazil, August 26, 2005 – World Grand Prix champions Brazil practically booked themselves a spot in the 2006 Women’s World Championship final round after claiming their third straight victory at the South America first round tournament – Pool A after beating Peru 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-19).

An efficient block and strong attack were enough for Brazil to wrap up the victory having earlier beaten Uruguay and Ecuador.

With the top two teams advancing to the final round, Brazil can only not advance if they lose their final match against Argentina, who are currently unbeaten with two wins from as many matches after beating Uruguay 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-20) on Friday, and see Peru (1-1) win their remaining two matches with a superior set-ratio.

With Peru set to play Argentina on Saturday and Brazil taking on Argentina on Sunday, the only way Brazil could falter is if Peru beat Argentina and Ecuador (on Sunday) while Argentina beat Brazil. That would leave all three teams with a 3-1 record.

Brazil (3-0) lead the five-team tournament with Argentina (2-0) and Peru (1-1) in second and third respectively.

Uruguay, who have now suffered three defeats, are out of contention but Ecuador, who have yet to register a win in two matches, need to win their final two games against Uruguay on Saturday and Peru on Sunday and hope for other results to go their way to stay in contention.

South America has only two vacancies in the final round of the 2006 Women’s World Championship.

The tournament concludes on Sunday.
