Brazil make excellent start

Cabo Frio, Brazil, August 25, 2005 – World number two Brazil made a superb start to the 2006 Women’s World Championship first round tournament (South America A) winning their second match from as many games on Thursday after beating Uruguay 3-0 (25-7, 25-16, 25-13).

Brazil lead the five-team tournament after beating Ecuador 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-5) with Argentina and Peru in second and third respectively with one win apiece. Peru beat Uruguay 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-13) on Wednesday while Argentina beat Ecuador 3-0 (25-16, 25-7, 25-9) on Thursday. Uruguay and Ecuador have suffered two defeats.

The top two finishers in the tournament will advance to the final round of the 2006 World Championships as members of the South America zone.

South America has only two vacancies in the final round of the 2006 Women’s World Championship.

The tournament concludes on Sunday.
