We expected a more difficult match – coach Nikolaev

Coach Jothish admits that his squad lacks the experience to play against teams like Russia

Ankara, Turkey, August 30, 2013 – As Russia beat India by 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-16) in a quarterfinal match at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Ankara, the winning side admitted they expected the clash to be much more difficult.  This is what the two teams’ coaches and captains had to say after the game.

T.C. Jothish, coach of India: “I think we need more experience to play against big teams like Russia. We can play better against teams on the same level with us, but it is difficult to play against teams on a higher level. We will try to do our best in the next games.’’

Lavmeet Katariya, captain of India: “Today the Russian team played very well and it was difficult for us to play against them.’’

Mikhail Nikolaev, coach of Russia: “We thought that the Indian team is much stronger; we actually worried that it would be much more difficult to play against them. Of course, they have good physical conditioning, good attacks and passes. But we had the special tactics to neutralise them from the start of the match. Still, today it was not our best performance. We will try to be better tomorrow. We have not seen yet how the Turkish team plays so we will see it today and then we will know what to be expecting for the next matches.’’

Egor Feoktistov, captain of Russia: ”The match was easier than we expected; it was less emotional, I mean. Still, it was not too comfortable to play against the Indian team, but we concentrated and managed to neutralise their play. We have won all our matches at this championship, except for the one against Italy, which we lost in the tie-breaker.  So we will try to continue winning as now this is our only objective.’’
