France upset Italy as favourites Russia and Serbia set first win at Men's U21


Host Turkey celebrate second victory against Morocco at Men's U21 World Championship in Ankara

 Ankara, Turkey, August 23, 2013 – Heavy favourite teams Russia and Serbia started their FIVB Men's U21 World Championship campaign victorious against rivals Brazil and USA respectively as they were in a rest on opening day, while fairly prepared France upset Italy on a thrilling second day held in Ankara and Izmir on Friday.

 It was 140 minutes of hard fought needed for defending champions Russia to overpower spirited Brazil 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 16-14) in the day's high class show. on the other hand Serbia needed 82 minutes to outclass USA 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17)

 The exciting day featured also second win for the organizer Turkey against Morocco, while Tunisia cruised past Rwanda in all African clash.

 Two matches in Ankara made the spectators on their toes for more than 2 hours each as mighty Egypt passed the political conditions in their country with a tight win over China, while Estonia surprised Japan both in Marathon tiebreakers.  

 World No. 1 in Junior and Youth FIVB ranking, Argentina suffered a straight sets defeat against Iran in a conclusion of the Friday's action.

 Brazil coach Leonardo Carvalho was happy with the performance, sad to lose the epic encounter. "To win one match like this we must play much better. We had the chance to win, but  we made mistakes in reception, we had to be more aggressive. We are not happy with the result. I think we could be better," Leo said.

 France Coach Stephane Faure was cheered with the victory against rivals Italy in a traditional European Face off. "It was our day. We are very happy to win the match. We have been waiting for this game since a long time."

 On the other hand Egypt coach Gaber Abouzeid was pleased with the victory coming in a tough political situation for his country. "China are strong, but we played with our hearts today to send a message to our families in Egypt. Starting well in the championship was important for us," He said

Pool A

Egypt v China 3-2 (27-29, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 15-8)
 
Egypt earned their first victory at Men's U21 World Championship by upsetting the Asian powerhouse China in five thrilling sets.  In Friday’s first Pool A match the squad from North Africa rejoiced after defeating their opponents by 3-2 (27-29, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 15-8) in almost two hours of play time.
 
China’s Tingwei Yan was the top scorer of the match with 26 points.  Mohamed Masoud was Egypt’s most prolific player with 23 points, five of which from blocking.
 
Morocco v Turkey 0-3 (24-26, 21-25, 22-25)
 
Turkey succeeded in pulling off a second straight-set victory to the delight of the home fans in Ankara.  In the last match on Friday’s schedule at Baskent Volleyball Hall, the local heroes shut out a whole-hearted Moroccan side by 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-22).
 
With 14 points made up of 1 ace, 3 blocks and 10 hits, Turkey’s captain Baturalp Burak Gungor became the best scorer of the match.  Zouhair El Graoui produced 13 points for the team of Morocco.
 
Pool B

Estonia v Japan 3-2 (27-29, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 15-8)
 
The teams of Estonia and Japan became responsible for Tournament's first five-set match of the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Turkey.  The European team achieved their first victory as they overpowered their Asian opponents by 3-2 (27-29, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 15-8). 
 
In a this very exciting and well-disputed match, Estonia had to come from behind twice to prompt a tie-breaker, in which coach Urmas Tali’s players dominated on the court to rejoice with the win.

Renee Teppan contributed 17 points to Estonia's victory to become the best scorer of the match.  Takuya Takahashi was Japan's top scorer with 14 points.  He achieved 6 of them by blocking.
 
Argentina v Iran 0-3 (19-25, 20-25, 18-25)
 
Iran achieved their second Pool B victory by shutting out Argentina.  In what was the South American team’s opening match at the tournament, Ferhad Nafarzadeh’s squad brought them disappointment, but pleased the numerous Iranian fans on the stands by claiming a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) victory.
 
 Pablo Koukartsev topped the scorers’ chart of the match with 10 points.  Ghara Ebadipour and captain Javad Hosseinabadi contributed 9 each to Iran’s victory.

Pool C

Serbia v USA 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17)
 
 World No. 2 at Junior and Youth FIVB ranking and tournament's heavy favourite Serbia took over No. 6 USA in straight sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) in Pool C at Ataturk Hall in Izmir.

 Serbia started their tournament campaign with a win- loss ratio of 1-0 as this is their first match, while USA dropped to 1-1.

 Senior team outside hitter Uros Kovacevic was Serbia's and match best scorer with 17 points including 2 ace services, while USA's Benjamin Patch was his team scorer with 16 points including 2 successful blocks and 1 ace. 

 Tunisia v Rwanda 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-18)
 
 African Champions and World No. 14 in Junior and Youth FIVB ranking, Tunisia overwhelmed No. 20 Rwanda in a straight set mission (25-12, 25-15, 25-18) in Pool C.

 After second match Tunisia improved to 1-1, while Rwanda dropped to 0-2 in 2 matches till now.

 Opposites Adam Oueslati and middle blocker Elyes Garfi led the Tunisian scorers with 15 points each, while Rwanda's captain Aimable Mutuyimana contributed 13 for his team as best scorer from his side.

 The wide blocking performance (12 stuff blocks against 3) and service aces (6 against 3) made the difference in the match to the Tunisian side.

Pool D

Russia v Brazil 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 16-14)

European powerhouses and World No. 4 Russia registered an epic 3-2 victory (25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 16-14) over South American rivals No. 5 Brazil in Pool D in Izmir.

 Russia's opposite spiker Victor Poletaev led the match scorers with impressive 28 points which the competition's best scoring performance so far; while Brazil's opposite Alan Souza contributed 21 for his side.

Russian blockers played the crucial role in the victory specially in the first and third set having a dominance of 15 stuff blocks throughout the match. Russia also scored 12 aces making over the best serving performance against 7 for the Brazilian side.

France v Italy 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-23)
 
France blockers made the difference and led France to impressive win against rivals Italy in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-23) in Pool D. France improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0, while Italy dropped depressively to 0-2 after the competition's second day.

 The solid French blockers beside the high motivations were the key factor of this victory as the winners led 10-6 on stuff blocks beside the great action of their defence.

 Opposite spiker Julien Winkelmuller was the match scorer gaining 15 points for the winners followed by Thibault Rossard who scored 11 points for his side. Italy's opposite Luigi Randazzo contributed 13 points for the losers as best scorer from his side.
