FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

We recovered from a nervous start of our first match in this championship - Japan

After tight first two sets Japan showed their potential in the next two

Ankara, Turkey, August 22, 2013 – The fact that this was their first match at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Ankara made the Japanese team nervous at the beginning, as their coach and captain admitted, but then they recovered to defeat Mexico by 3-1 (23-25, 29-27, 25-17, 25-16).  According to the Mexicans, the second set was the key to the outcome of this encounter.  These are the statements the coaches and the captains made after the end of the game.

Jorge Lopez, coach of Mexico: “We were good at reception and serving in the first set. However, we could not concentrate on the game in the second set’s last minutes and we lost it. We made too many mistakes in the third and fourth sets, mostly in reception. I hope we play better in the next matches. Congratulations to Japanese team!”

Jonathan Ponce, captain of Mexico: “I want to congratulate Japan for their win. We started well in the first set actually. We were good in blocking and defence, so we won it. Japan played better and in high speed in the second set. We worked hard to stop them. In the third and fourth sets, we lost concentration completely and they won the match. We are going to work more to win our following matches.”

Noriaki Sako, coach of Japan: “My players fought very well in the match today. It was a hard match and my players were nervous as it was our first match in this championship. We took a great win. I think my players will be more relaxed in the next matches.”

Masahiro Sekita, captain of Japan: “We were very nervous in the match because it was our first match in the championship. However, we managed to win the match. Mexico was good in the first set, but we took the control in the second set and did even better through the rest of the match.”
