Italy among the first four in the world thanks to a 3-0 win against Dominican Republic

2011 World champion Italy celebrate after their entry in semifinal

Brno, Czech Republic, June 28, 2013 – Italy confirmed themselves among the best four team in the world by winning the quarterfinals match in Kajot arena on Friday against Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22). Italy’s experience was shown by the 2011 world champions especially in the difficult points after 20, on each set. They kept calm and managed to overcome the younger opponents.

After the first set (25-28), Italy bad start in the second set (6-2) seemed to clean a good path for the Dominican, but a few attacks from “Azzurre” paired the score. The two teams challenged each other, point by point, but Italy was more effective in every skill, especially in blocking the opponents’ spikes. Alessia Fiesoli entered for the last part of the set to score 2 important points, Elena Perinelli closed from zone 4 the last ball of the set (25-20).

The reception and a serve not so effective was the real problem of Dominican Republic in the third set: the Italians were risking their serves, while the opponents could not create their best play without good passes for setter Celenia Toribio or her substitute Yokaty Perez. The set was 20-20 when Italy again raised the power of their volleyball to clinch the first match ball. Anna Nicoletti’s ace closed the match, confirming the tall spiker as best player of this match (16 points for her), while Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez was once again the team leader of the Caribbean squad.
