Control Committee meeting opens official part of U20 World Champs

FIVB officials and representatives of the Organizing Committee met in Brno’s Holiday Inn to start their official cooperation for the Women’s U20 World Championship

Brno, Czech Republic, June 18, 2013 - On Tuesday morning, FIVB officials and representatives of the Organizing Committee met in Brno’s Holiday Inn to start their official cooperation for the FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship organized by the Czech Volleyball Federation.

Control Committee President Dr. Amr Elwani as well as Robert Urbanek, Organizing Committee President and Executive Director of the Women’s U20 World Championship, welcomed the FIVB officials from all over the world for the much-awaited competition in Brno, Czech Republic. The Women’s U20 World Championship set to run through June 21-30 will be the seventeenth edition since the premiere in 1977 in Saõ Paulo and will feature the best twenty U20 teams from the world fighting for the crown.

“I’m very happy to come back to Brno where I experienced some of the best moments of my volleyball career”, said CC President Amr Elwani. “Working with the coaching legend Dr. Frantisek Stibitz was a great honour for me. I have many unforgettable memories from that remarkable period of my life.”

Host of Pool A, including the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Taipei as well as Puerto Rico and Pool B featuring China, Serbia, Japan, Thailand as well as Columbia is the Kajot Arena, an ice hockey stadium with a volume of 7.000 seats. Pool C with Brazil, USA, Mexico, Russia as well as Bulgaria and Pool D opposing Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Algeria as well as Nigeria will be played in SH Vodova with a capacity of 3.000 places. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic and is located in the south-eastern part of the country.  The city lies at the confluence of the Svitava and Svratka rivers and has about 400,000 residents.

The competition features a revised format having been expanded from 16 to 20 teams comprising the hosts and 19 qualifiers. Italy go into the competition as defending champions after they defeated Brazil in the 2011 final for their first gold medal in the history of the tournament. Brazil, champions on six occasions, will be out to make up for that loss, but 2011 bronze medallists China will also be confident off claiming the gold for themselves.

The women’s Under 20 World Championships are held every two years and the 2011 edition took place in the cities of Lima and Trujillo in Peru.
