Semifinals are set in U-20 Women’s Pan Am Cup

Havana, Cuba, March 21, 2013 – Peru and Colombia will join Mexico and the Dominican Republic in the semifinals of the U-20 Women’s Pan American Cup after winning their respective quarterfinals on Thursday.

Peru won a five-set thriller over Puerto Rico advancing to a clash against the undefeated Mexico while Colombia defeated Cuba in four sets getting a pass to play with the Dominican Republic on Friday.

The victories mean all semifinalists come from Pool A, which
featured teams who had already qualified for the FIVB U20 Women’s Volleyball World Championship prior to the tournament, while Pool B grouped together teams who hadn't, putting on offer one ticket to Brno to the Pool B winner regardless of the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

Puerto Rico, who had qualified to the FIVB event on Wednesday after winning Pool B, clash with Costa Rica while Cuba meets Chile in the qualification round for the 5-8 positions.

Colombia 3, Cuba 1
Colombia defeated Cuba 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 27-29, 25-13) and advanced to the semifinals. The South Americans, who had superiority in the attack and the serve, were led by Maria Martinez's offense with 23 points, escorted by Danna Escobar (18) and Dianna Arrechea (11). Cuba had youngster Meliza Vargas, of only 13 years-old, as their top scorer with 22 points and Sulian Matienzo with 10.

Peru 3, Puerto Rico 2
Peru won a thrilling match of five sets over Puerto Rico by scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 19-25, 15-13) to advance to the semifinals. Angela Leyva and Izabot Bravo topped the winners with 19 and 18 points respectively while Gina Lopez contributed 10 tallies. Puerto Rican Daly Santana led all the players in the match with 24 points, followed on her team by Pilar Victoria and Kanisha Jimenez with 18 and 11 respectively.
