FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Argentinean Nicolas Lazo is a product of Mini-Volley

Argentinean Nicolas Lazo is one of the most powerful servers in the FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship

Tijuana, Mexico, July 7, 2013 – Volleyball did not arrive in the life of Nicolas Lazo by chance. On the contrary, it was a case of a long relationship between his family and the sport he loves.

A product of the mini-volley program developed by several clubs in his native Argentina, one of the star players of the 2013 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship began his career when he was just five years old and was one of those children playing during regular games at the River Plate Club in Buenos Aires.

“Everybody in my family played volleyball, so it was very natural for me to fall in love with the sport,” says Lazo. “I also played basketball and football, but it was an easy decision to stay with volleyball.”

“When I was eight years old my family moved to another city in the province of Buenos Aires and I played with San Juan Volley Club before returning to River Plate when I was 15,” he recalls.

Originally trained by the coaches Damian Arredondo and Juan Cichelo, Lazo made his first international appearance as part of the Argentina team that competed in the 2011 FIVB Boys’ U19 that took place in Almirante Brown and Bahia Blanca.

Then at 16 he had not yet developed into the class of offensive threat he is now and was only sporadically used by coach Fabian Muraco, now an advanced scout for the team.

Entering the last day of competition at the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship, Lazo is the third best scorer of the competition with 125 points behind the Chilean Dusan Bonacic (143) and Japanese Yuki Ishikawa (136) and also the third best server trailing Russian Pavel  Pankov and Polish Pawel Gryc.

“The competition has been good and it has been a great experience for me and my teammates,” said Lazo, who hopes to follow the footsteps of Facundo Conte and Rodrigo Quiroga, the players he admires the most among the members of the Argentina Senior National Team. “I like a lot the way they both play.”

In just a few hours Argentina will be playing against Brazil in South American classic for the fifth place of this edition of the world championship, where he hopes to help with his amazing serves and spikes.

“I work very hard in training,” Lazo says. “To be good you have to dedicate a lot of time to practice.”
