Russia’s goal is the gold

Russian players celebrate with Dmitry Volkov on their shoulders after their one-side victory over Iran on Saturday

Tijuana, Mexico, July 6, 2013 – After outclassing Iran in straight sets to advance to the gold medal match, the plan of Russia team is not to stop there.

The captain Victor Poletaev expressed the feelings of his teammates during the press conference after the match saying the goal is now to win the gold medal on Sunday.

Victor Poletaev, captain of Russia: “We had a special practice session for this match to correct everything from the past matches. Today we had very strong serves and also strong and organized blocking. All the players are very happy and tomorrow the goal is to go after the gold.”

Mohammadjavad Mananinezhad, captain of Iran: “Today Russia played so well and we tried to battle but couldn’t do anything to stop them. We wish them good luck and hope they can win the championship. In our case, we are going to concentrate in winning the third place, which is very important for us.”

Alexander Karikov, coach of Russia: “The first set was very difficult because Iran is a good team. Our plan as my captain said was to put strong serves and organize the block. We concentrated on those two things and it worked perfectly for us. I hope the setter of Iran recovers and he is able to play tomorrow.”

Iraj Mozaffari, coach of Iran: “Russia is a very strong team and in the past tournaments you didn’t play crossed matches the way we are doing in this tournament. Players 4 (Poletaev) and 15 (Volkov) were outstanding and also the setter (Pankov). We will go after the third place tomorrow.”

Karikov on the ability of the setter Pankov and his serves:

“Pankov is the leader of this team. He has been in volleyball since he was 4 or 5 years old. His father was a player, his mother was a player, and also his sister is a setter in the national team. Everyone in his family play volleyball. He is a smart player and he really can serve.”
