Brazil advance to quarterfinals, despite Finnish resilience

Finland recovered in the third and fourth sets to force a tie breaker.

Mexicali, Mexico, July 3 2013 - Brazil defeated Finland in five sets (25-20, 25-12, 29-31, 27-29, 15-12) to secure a berth in quarterfinals at FIVB Boys'U19 World Championship.

Rodrigo Leao scored 31 points, including three aces, and Douglas Souza totalized 26, for a Brazilian team that was tested by a surprising Finnish squad led by opposite Antti Ropponen.

Finnish coach Pertti Honkaken directed a solid and amazing effort by using almost all his arsenal.
Ropponen converted 21 points and was followed by Samuli Kaiskasako with 12. Karri Kutinlahti scored 11 and Miro Määttänen 10 to nearly dominate Brazil.

But on the other side of the net, the South American team also combined the work of Nicolas Santos, who closed with 11 units as well as Enrico Zappoli, Junior Lindomar and captain Fabio Rodrigues, with seven apiece.

Rodrigues converted the final spike into a decisive point and kept Brazilian hope alive to go on in the tournament.

Both teams had a balanced blocking performance with 15 successful plays on each side but Brazil worked hard to serve and looked more experienced in the tie breaker by keeping concentration.

Reception was also a very important skill for Brazil, thanks to the work of libber Rogerio who succeeded in 24 plays, while Finnish Määttänen did it in only 9.
