Cuba need to be in top shape against Russia

The more athletic Cubans dominated after a slow start in the match against Belgium

Tijuana, Mexico, July 3, 2013 – Cuba team must play much better in their next match than the way they showed today while defeating Belgium as the NORCECA champions meet the European champions Russia next Friday when play resumes after a rest day.

The opinion was expressed by Cuban coach Rodolfo Sanchez during the post-game press conference following their win in the round of sixteen.

Ricardo Calvo, captain of Cuba: “It was one of the most important games for our team in the competition. We didn’t play very well but we tried our best. The key for us was the team played united at the clutch moments.”

Sander Depovere, captain of Belgium: “We made too many mistakes today. That’s all I want to comment.”

Rodolfo Sanchez, coach of Cuba: “It was our worst match during the whole competition but we won it and I want to congratulate my players for the outcome. We started very slow and the recovered but never reached our peak. We need to play a lot better if we want to succeed against Russia. I wish good luck to Belgium in Mexicali.”

Steven Vanmedegael, coach of Belgium: “Today there was only one result that did matter and it was to win. One team is happy and we have to go to Mexicali. Good luck to Cuba the rest of the tournament.”
