A long journey from the Southern Hemisphere

The families of Argentinean players have traveled from many parts of the country to the cities of Mexicali and Tijuana.

Baja California Mexico, July 2013 – It was a long trip for the National team of Argentina. But they were not alone. The first stop was in Mexicali. Along with them there were their parents who also arrived in this border city to support them and also to spent some time around it.

Many of these families knew each others before. This was the third international tournament for the Argentinean boys that began this journey a couple of years ago when in 2011 they played the Pre-Youth South American Championship in Ecuador.

Since then, the Verasio, Johansen and Fernandez families, as well as some others have been a very important group that have shared many experiences, beyond the matches played by Argentina

Guillermo Fernandez, for example is the father of Gaston Fernandez. He was born in Guatrache, a town located in the Province of La Pama. He discovered volley when more than tow years ago, his son was detected and called up to the national age group squad.

Guillermo became a bigger fan. He traveled to Ecuador and also was in Chile in 2012 following the Youth South American championship.

During those competitions, He met German Johansen’s family and started a special friendship. But They aren’t the only ones. In Ecuador, Chile and now in Mexico, Silvana and “Lolo” Verasio, from the region of Rosario and parents of libero Michele Verasio are in Baja California.

The Verasio family as well as María and “Yeyo” Sánchez, parents of setter Matías Sanchez, have volleyball in their blood. They also traveled previously to Chile in 2012 to the Continental Qualifier.

However, there is one more special case. Jan Martinez, son of legendary former national player Esteban Martinez, is playing his first international competitions. Jan is only 15 years old and is also supported by his mother who as well as the rest of the “hinchas” (term used in Argentina as reference to fanatics) suffers and cheers up on every play from the bleachers.

Also as an special trademark of the “hinchada” (fan group) the white and sky blued flags and banners are seen at venues like the State Auditorium in Mexicali and the Baja California High Performance Center in Tijuana as a symbol of Argentinean presence all over the world.
