Brazil and Russia both advance with perfect play

Brazil completed a perfect score of 12 points joining Russia as the top pool winners at the FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship in Mexico

Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, July 1, 2013 – Brazil and Russia qualified with neat records to the round of sixteen of the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship to take place on Wednesday in both Tijuana and Mexicali, Baja California.

Both teams won all their matches by 3-0 score to collect the maximum twelve points at their four outings during the preliminary pool round.

Brazil completed their winning streak with quick victory in straight sets 25-15, 25-23, 25-15 over Algeria in Pool D, while Russia finished Finland also in consecutive frames 25-14, 25-15, 25-20 in Pool C.

“We must concentrate now in our next match, not in the championship,” Brazil coach Percy Oncken said. “If we want to succeed we must keep playing at the same level and not decrease it."

“Today I gave a chance to players from the bench,” Russia’s Aleexander Karikov said. “It was a day to practice many situations and I changed players and gave everybody the opportunity to play.”

Poland and Argentina were the other two pool winners with 11 points in Pools A and B respectively.

Poland breezed past Belgium in straight sets 25-22, 25-13, 25-21 and Argentina downed Turkey 25-20, 25-17, 25-20.

“We finish this round and go to Tijuana,” Argentina’s captain Matias Miranda said. “We appreciate everything people have done for us here. It is a very hot city, but the warmth of fans has made us feel happy.”

In the round of the last sixteen teams, Poland take on Turkey, Argentina meet hosts Mexico, Russia clash with United States and Brazil entertain Finland.
