Lack of experience hurt Rwanda’s chances

Rwanda's players show disappointment following the painful loss to Finland

Tijuana, Mexico, June 29, 2013 – The lack of experience betrayed Rwanda when the African team appeared to be crossing the finish line in their match against Finland. They made 40 errors during the match including one bad reception by libero Oreste Muhirwa to end the match of 2 hours and three minutes.

Sakari Makinen, captain of Finland: “A very big victory for us. We have shown a lot of spirit in the fifth set to overcome a tough opponent.”

Jacques Iradukunda, captain of Rwanda:
“You all have seen what happened. We tried our best but one has to win and the other has to lose. That’s the way it is.”

Pertti Honkanen, coach of Finland: “It was as tough match as anybody can ever see. They served the hardest floating serves I’ve ever seen. I am happy for my guys. I had to try to find a solution and those guys I put in there responded. It’s really a nice experience. Both teams were nervous and we were a little bit lucky. That’s the way it is in those close matches.”

Jean Marie Vianney, coach of Rwanda:
“The lack of experience hurt us. We lost due to the lack of experience. It is a big lesson for us. I want to congratulate the winners. They played very clever. Now I have to look forward to our next match.”
